In this role, you will:

  • Co-teach and plan with a general educator to develop academics-first lesson plans and instructional materials that meet the individual needs of students, including students with severe or multiple cognitive, developmental, and/or physical disabilities and medically complex conditions
  • Plan and implement motivating and creative age-appropriate lessons and activities to address goals as outlined in each students’ IEP
  • Facilitate interactions among students that provide opportunities for emotional, social, and cognitive growth
  • Assess students on a regular basis and maintain data records on each student’s progress to provide accurate evaluations and progress reports
  • Collaborate with therapists to implement an integrated educational/therapeutic model
  • Meet deadlines for IEP development and presentation, educational testing, and alternate assessments
  • Demonstrate culturally informed classroom management and discipline practices with the ability to neutralize the pattern of inequitable discipline of ren of color
  • Develop and maintain contact with families with an awareness and respect for all cultural, racial, socio-economic backgrounds, abilities, and family structures

Your Skills:

  • You are adept at modifying and diversifying lessons, materials, and communication to meet the individual needs of all students
  • You are creative in your ability to make/modify materials, and in your ability to facilitate motivating and engaging experiences for students
  • You are collaborative with the general education teacher, therapists and classroom staff to create a welcoming blended educational and therapeutic environment
  • You are flexible in how you provide services, and can adapt to changes easily
  • You use positive guidance techniques, such as redirection, modeling appropriate behavior and praise
  • You can clearly express your intentions through professional writing, and meet all requirements and deadlines for documentation in the IEP process
  • You are comfortable speaking with parents individually and presenting to multiple people in a group setting
  • You are technology-savvy and can live in the digital world

What you need:

  • Certified by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) as a Special Education Teacher
  • Certified in Severe Disabilities (All Ages), or Mild/Moderate Disabilities (Grades PK-8) with willingness to obtain Severe Disabilities Certification (Tuition reimbursement offered)
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Required
