The Carter School is a high school for students with special needs providing education, vocational opportunities, and recreational and social activities tailored to each student's specific interests and abilities.Our school programs believe the dignity of each person is paramount, recognizing that our schools future strength rests firmly on our commitment to recognize, respect and uphold the dignity of all our students, their families and our faculty and staff.In this role, you will: Function as a General Education Teacher, Special Education Teacher or Teacher Assistant as needed in all classrooms K-12 (K-8 inclusive and high school Special Education) at The Grace School and Carter SchoolAs a General Education Teacher, use a standards-based curriculum, develop lesson plans, progress reports and individual learning plans that promote active learningAs a Special Education Teacher, develop academics-first lesson plans and instructional materials that allow for modification and adaptation to meet the individual needs of students, including students with severe or multiple cognitive, developmental, and/or physical disabilities and medically complex conditionsAs a Teacher Assistant, provide individual instruction and support to students in special education to help address their IEP goals and provide personal care throughout the school dayFacilitate interactions among students that provide opportunities for emotional, social, and cognitive growthAssess students and/or assist with student data collection to maintain records on each students progress and to provide accurate evaluations and progress reportsCollaborate with therapists to implement an integrated educational/therapeutic modelDemonstrate culturally informed classroom management and discipline practices with the ability to neutralize the pattern of inequitable discipline of studentsDevelop and maintain contact with families with an awareness and respect for all cultural, racial, socio-economic backgrounds, abilities, and family structuresScheduled Hours: This is a full-time, regularly scheduled, benefit-eligible position.Your Skills: You are flexible in your abilities to work with students of a range of ages and abilities, and to assume varying roles within the classroomYou are adept at modifying and diversifying lessons, materials, and communication to meet the individual needs of all studentsYou are collaborative with other teachers, therapists and classroom staff to create a welcoming blended educational and therapeutic environmentYou use positive guidance techniques, such as redirection, modeling appropriate behavior and praiseYou are comfortable speaking with parents individually and presenting to multiple people in a group settingMore About You: You believe in the power of inclusion, and that these environments allow learners of all abilities to thrive and develop to their fullest potentialYou are passionate about being an integral part of a diverse school community, and have respect and understanding for diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, abilities, and family structuresYou are supportive and empathetic towards your students, and you strive to create a safe space for students to explore and express themselves as they develop individuallyYou are passionate and immersed in your subject area and are committed to being a life-long learnerYou model our schools values of respect, compassion, integrity, inclusivity, and excellence in all of your actions and communicationWhat you need: Certified by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) as a Teacher, Special Education Teacher certification is a plusWillingness to assume all roles of General Education Teacher, Special Education Teacher and Teacher AssistantCOVID-19 Vaccination RequiredMeeting Street is committed to ideals of justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, learning and creating an anti-racist work culture.Meeting Street is a non-profit organization offering a high-coverage, low-cost benefits package to employees working thirty or more hours weekly.
