Job Description

Temporary teaching position - fill a long term vacancy through the end of 21/22 school year.

  • Contingent upon funding
Under direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor, the LTS (Long Term Substitute) will gain essential and meaningful teaching experience. Excellent performance in this capacity will position a teacher well to compete for permanent teaching positions in Providence Schools and elsewhere.

Compensation and benefits for this position are equal to the compensation and benefits of a regular teacher including salary according to the Providence teacher salary scale (including during school vacation) on a step determined by previous teaching experience (credit given for experience in accredited schools and/or in a certified capacity). Other benefits include paid sick days, generous health benefits, and paid professional development.

Under direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor, teaches and instructs students in academic subject matter, social, emotional, behavioral, and educational skill areas.

Plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students.
Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student.
Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings.
Monitors and evaluates student outcomes.
Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community.
Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.
Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

Additionally, teachers will:
become members of a professional learning community where purposeful collaboration, flexibility, innovation and shared decision making are encouraged
participate in all district and school-based professional development inclusive of working with internal (coaches) and external (consultants) supports
support and nurture the academic, social-emotional, and physical needs of all students
participate in building a coalition of parent, community and business partners
engage in all district-driven curricular and other initiatives as defined by the Providence School Department

Roles & Responsibilities
In conjunction with dual language partner, creates both a classroom and a community environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives
Becomes familiar with and upholds the principles of dual language instruction
Participates in district and school-based professional development activities
In collaboration with dual language partner, plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and work time that provides students with opportunities to learn, observe, question, investigate, and develop into bilingual and biliterate citizens
Instructs students individually and in groups using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions and demonstrations
In collaboration with dual language partner, adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests
With dual language partner, plans instruction that systematically addresses language objectives and builds students' ability to transfer and build upon knowledge between both languages of instruction
Develops and maintains positive and cooperative interactions and communications with parents, colleagues and community
Functions and presents as a unified team together with dual language partner when speaking on behalf of or problem solving for a student with parents, administrators, SPED teams, other colleagues, or any other stakeholder
Monitors and assesses student progress and discusses and analyzes assessment data with dual language partner in order to adjust student instruction accordingly
Makes recommendations about appropriate accommodations for all types of formal assessments
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a positive learning environment in the classroom
Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities

KG-6 or Elem. 1-6 with Bilingual Spanish

ESL Preferred

Minimum Qualifications
Fully-certified as described above in "RIDE requirements" or willingness to become fully certified including on an emergency basis if necessary (fully-certified strongly preferred)
Understanding of and willingness to work within the framework of an Aligned Instruction System as described in Providence School Board policy NSBA/NEPN: IF (available under "Policies and Regs" at
You must complete the new hire compliance training prior to your first day of employment
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check. Selected candidates cannot begin work until passing their background check.
Excellent technology skills including
familiarity with communication, presentation, and data management tools and applications in desktop, web-based, and mobile environments
willingness and ability to model information, communication, technology, and media literacy for students, colleagues, parents, and community
willingness and ability to continuously develop and evolve new skills and support colleagues in the development of their skills
